Our second weekend trip of the year was another visit to the land of the stars, Los Angeles. Last year we had the opportunity to visit, funny enough it was pretty much on the same weekend, but there were still a few more things that we wanted to visit in Los Angeles, which is why we decided to visit again. So here’s the first part of our recap of our second trip to Los Angeles!

The Wandering Weekenders- Exploring Los Angeles

Friday

We had a very late flight out of Houston Friday night, so it was almost midnight by the time we landed in Los Angeles. So we quickly grabbed a cab and headed to Beverly Hills and to turn in for the night. This trip we decided to stay at The Beverly Hilton in the heart of Beverly Hills, and it was a very nice and swanky hotel. We definitely loved how beautiful the hotel was.

Saturday

We woke up at a decent hour on Saturday because we had a lot that we wanted to accomplish during our only full day in the city of angels. About 8:00 we got an uber and headed to downtown Los Angeles to explore The Last Bookstore.

The Last Bookstore

The Wandering Weekenders- Exploring Los Angeles

The Last Bookstore is a new and used bookstore located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. Not only is it known for having an amazing amount of books, including some rare books, but it’s also known for a lot of its book art. The first floor is purely a bookstore with the rare book section, while the second floor is dedicated to the book art with some more books that you can pick up.

They opened at 10:00 AM on Saturday, and we were there right when it opened. We had such a blast exploring the books and being amazed by all of the book art. You’ve seen the picture  of the flying books on my Instagram already, but I don’t know if it’s my favorite book art or the book arch! If you’ve never visited The Last Bookstore, I definitely recommend it.

Daikokuya

The Wandering Weekenders- Exploring Los Angeles

After we were done exploring The Last Bookstore, we were ready for lunch. Before we left for LA, I had looked at The Local Adventurer’s post on their 49 Favorite Places To Eat in Los Angeles, and they were raving about a ramen place in Downtown LA that was within walking distance. We had taken their suggestion about a ramen place during our visit to NYC, and they were completely spot on, so we knew we could trust them.

The Wandering Weekenders- Exploring Los Angeles

When we showed up to Daikokuya a little bit after 11, the line was already out the door! We put our names on the list and waited about 20 minutes before getting a seat, and let me tell you the wait was totally worth it. If you love ramen and are in the downtown LA area, you definitely need to check this place out.

The Getty

After lunch, we had a few hours before our Warner Brothers Studio Tour, so we decided to visit one of the places I had heard so much about, The Getty. The Getty is a beautiful building that is not only home to a beautiful garden area, but also some amazing art as well. The best part about The Getty is that it’s free admission, just make sure you bring some money for parking!

The Getty is located at N Sepulveda Blvd and Getty Center Dr, so we had about a 30 minute Uber drive to get us from Downtown LA to The Getty. When we arrived, it seemed like there was a very long line to get on the trolley that takes you to the top of The Getty, so we decided to walk. That was a very big mistake! The line goes quickly, and it’s a longer walk up to the top than you think.

The Wandering Weekenders- Exploring Los Angeles

Once we made it to the top, we decided to explore the Garden area of The Getty and check out the views since we really didn’t have that much time to explore. The Getty is set up on a hill, and it has some of the most amazing views of Los Angeles. You definitely don’t want to miss it!

The Gardens are just as extraordinary as the view from The Getty. I can’t imagine the amount of time and effort it must take to maintain everything, but I’m so glad that they do. It’s such a stunning site to see, and totally worth the trip. While we were there we noticed that several families had brought lunches with them and were having a picnic in the Garden area. It definitely seems like the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

The Wandering Weekenders- Exploring Los Angeles

By the time we were done exploring The Gardens, we really didn’t have any time for anything else because we had to make it to our studio tour. I would definitely want to go back and explore all of the amazing art exhibits during our next visit.

As I said, we had a very busy day in Los Angeles, and I’m not even done recapping it yet! Check back next time for a full recap on our Warner Brothers Studio Tour! I’m linking up with Kerri, Kate, and Emily for Wanderlust Wednesday!

    • The Last Bookstore really was awesome! Even if you don’t like books you could spend a long time just looking at the art! The Getty was beautiful! I think that I was so distracted by the view that I forgot to take pictures of the beautiful building!

  • The bookstore is gorgeous! We always try to go to a fun local bookstore when traveling, so I’ll be sure we go to this one whenever we get to Los Angeles!!

    • There’s just something about bookstores that draws you in, right? It’s kind of like The Shop Around The Corner in You’ve Got Mail! I hope you get to stop by when y’all make it to LA!

  • I need to go to that book store! It looks amazing!

    • The Last Bookstore was one of our favorite stops on our trip! You should definitely stop by if you take a trip to LA!

  • Darcy from A Memory of Us

That Last Book store seems so cool! I could spend hours in there
    http://www.amemoryofus.com

    • You definitely could! From looking at the art, the rare books, and everything else it has, there’s a ton to see at The Last Bookstore!

  • I have to visit that book store!!!! Such a cool find!

  • Ah so that’s where the flying book picture is from! That one’s really cool, as is the book arch, but I think I’d be a bit scared to walk underneath it! Looks a bit precarious!

Those gardens are stunning though. I’d happily spend all day there, picnic or no picnic!

    • That’s where that picture is from! It was so cool to see it all and we could have spent hours just looking at the books and the art!
I think that you could probably spend a whole day at The Getty and still not be able to see everything in the gardens and in the museum! I feel like I need another trip just to spend more time there!

  • Biana Perez

I’ve never been to LA but it’s on my short list of places to go…love the hotel you chose to stay at!! xo, Biana –BlovedBoston

    • I felt so famous staying at The Beverly Hilton! The only negative was that I felt we couldn’t walk to many places from there. I hope you have the chance to visit LA soon! I think that you’d have a blast!

  • Ahh I remember your snaps of the Last Bookstore and it looks so cool!!! What a neat place to visit! And I’ve never had ramen besides out of a little cheap package haha!

  • OMG – I NEED to go to The Last Bookstore, it looks like my heaven on Earth. And, those gardens are gorgeous! Always fun to find a hidden gem in such a huge city.

    • The Last Bookstore was amazing! I wanted to stay in there for hours looking at the art and the books! Just everything about The Getty was awesome! I feel like I need to go back so we can see the art museum too!

  • How cool! I’ve never been to Los Angeles. Ramen sounds so good. And I like checking out weird bookstores. Although I would be afraid I would mess something up in that one.

    • Haha I didn’t want to touch anything in The Last Bookstore either, especially since I’m known for being clumsy! The ramen was out of this world and definitely hit the spot! LA was definitely one of those cities that I didn’t think that I’d like, but I’ve loved every visit we’ve had!

  • The Last Bookstore looks AMAZING. I love what they’ve done with the book art. What a fun place to explore!

    • The Last Bookstore was so cool! We spent a few hours just looking at the books and the art, and could’ve stayed longer! I’m so glad my coworker told me to check it out!

    • You should definitely try to visit if you take a trip to LA! It was so cool seeing all of the books and the amazing art! I’d definitely go back!

  • That bookstore looks sooo fun!! Love all the art in there. The Getty looks amazing too!! What pretty blooms and views, totally makes me want to go to LA asap. I have a dream to drive from San Diego to San Fran and make stops in between, hope that happens soon!

    • The Last Bookstore and The Getty were both so awesome! We definitely could have spent a ton of time at both locations. The road trip from San Diego to San Fran would be so amazing! We drove a little down highway 1 from San Fran to Big Sur a few years ago for a vacation and it was one of the most beautiful places in the United States I’ve ever seen!

  • Such a beautiful city that I need to explore more on my next visit! How fun is that bookstore, and the Getty looks incredible <3
    Green Fashionista

  • Jasmine @makingrestorations

I love quirky bookstores like that and have heard nothing but good things about the Getty Garden. If only I lived on the west Coast! I love your travel style. We get up early to in order to soak every bit of goodness out of the day

    • The Last Bookstore was awesome, and I’m so glad that my coworker told us about it so we could see it on this trip! We enjoyed The Getty so much, I just wish that we could have seen some of the art while we were there too! Waking up early is the way to really maximize the time we have, especially when we’re only visiting for a weekend! It’s amazing how much you can actually see!

  • Those gardens are beautiful!! We always end up walking places and realize it’s a lot farther than we originally thought lol

    • When the guy at The Getty told us that it wasn’t that far of a walk we were like ok, we’ll just walk and not wait. What he didn’t tell us was that it was all uphill! We were so winded! It was still fun though!

  • Nadine

You really did squeeze a lot in!!! I love the book store that you got to visit and those gardens are gorgeous! I would love to visit LA some day. I am off to dream about your ramen bowl!

    • I had to do a lot of traveling time planning to make sure we’d get to see everything we wanted but it was totally worth it! The Getty was beautiful and The Last Bookstore was amazing! I hope you get to visit someday! LA really does have a ton to do! The ramen was amazing, and I highly recommend it!

  • This sounds like the best trip!! The WB studio tour is one of my favorite things to do, we had so much fun when we did it. I miss LA so much, if it wasn’t a 5 hour flight we would go all the time! The book store looks incredible- its so unique and there is so much to look at. I am adding it to my list!

    • When we took our first trip there last year I didn’t expect to fall in love with the city as much as we did! We’ve been on two weekend trips and I still feel like there’s a ton that we haven’t done! California is still one of my favorite places in general to visit! The WB studio tour was so awesome! I can’t wait to recap it!

  • Wow the Getty garden is so pretty! i would love to visit LA and tour around. Daikokuya sounds amazing and if the line is out the door then that says something right there!

    • Exactly! If there’s a line and it looks authentic, that’s generally a good sign! The Getty was so beautiful and I loved just seeing everything in bloom! I hope that you get to visit soon! I think that you’d really love LA!

  • I would love to visit The Last Bookstore! That book art looks so neat! Can’t wait to read more about your Warner Bros. Tour!

    • You would love The Last Bookstore! Not only was the art amazing, but they had so many books! You could spend hours in there just looking around! The Warner Bros tour was awesome and I can’t wait to recap it!

  • I’ve been to LA countless times. I’m pretty sure I told you before that I lived in Newport Beach, Cali for a year, and one of my best girlfriends was living in West Hollywood at the time. I spent a lot of weekends at her place. Shame on me for never visiting The Last Bookstore. I am pretty sure I could bring a sleeping bag and just live there.

    • I remember you telling me that you lived in LA and all of the famous people you saw at parties when you lived there! I was so jealous because we just saw bravo people when we were there. The Last Bookstore was out of this world! You could spend hours in there just looking at the artwork or trying to find your next book to read. It’s just an excuse to try and go back to visit, right?

  • how totally cool is that bookstore!!! I love the gallery wall there and the pic of you amongst the books. Adorable! I have never been to the Getty but really want to go. I always hear how pretty it is!

    • We heard about The Getty so much during our last trip that I knew we had to visit while we were there this time around. There’s actually The Getty Villa too, and it has a lot of Greek and Roman sculptures I think. The Last Bookstore was so amazing, and I’m so glad my coworker told us about it!

  • That bookstore!! OMG! I need to go there! I love any kind of quirky place, but a quirky book place is my dream!

    • You would fall in love with The Last Bookstore! Not only do they have a huge book collection, but the artwork is so cool! I could’ve spent hours in there!

  • So. I’m going to San Diego in September and have been contemplating flying into LA (and then driving down with a friend) since I’ve never been as an adult. That bookstore has me thisclose to actually doing it.

    • Even if you go just for The Last Bookstore you would have a great time! Plus y’all could drive down Highway 1 to San Diego, and if it’s anything like the drive from San Francisco to Big Sur the beauty will blow you away! And even if you just fly into San Diego, you’ll have fun too!

  • Erin

This makes me want to get out to LA asap, now! 🙂 That bookstore looks like SO much fun- I would definitely spend hours in there!!

    • You definitely should try to head out there soon! It’s such a fun city, and I’m sure you’d find lots of new things to see and do!

  • Rachel

We are stopping in LA next month for a few days before heading to Palm Springs so this is perfect timing! We will definitely have to check out this book store, my husband will love it. Have a wonderful weekend!

  • Lauren @BonVoyageLauren

Really enjoyed reading this! I came over from Girls vs. Globe FB group. I’m from L.A. and you visited some of my favorite spots! I have the exact same picture taken at the Last Bookstore with my head in between that circle of books, haha.

Thanks for sharing and happy travels 🙂

    • I’m so glad that we hit up some of your favorite spots! Every time we visit LA I always feel like I find more reasons to love it! I don’t feel like we had the chance to really explore The Getty, but that just means that we need another trip back soon!

  • that last bookstore place looks like my kind of happy place lol. and those gardens are gorgeous!

    • I definitely thought about all of my fellow book lovers when we were walking around The Last Bookstore! Not only was the art amazing, but there were so many books to look through! The Gardens were beautiful, and I wish that we had more time to spend there.

  • That bookstore looks amazing! Sounds like such a fun weekend escape 🙂

    • The Last Bookstore was so awesome! We loved looking at all of the art and all the books. LA was so much fun, and I already want to go back and visit other parts of the city that we haven’t had a chance to visit yet.
