Happy Monday everybody! After both of our flights were delayed this weekend, we’re finally back from our anniversary trip to Denver! In true after weekend trip hangover fashion, I’m linking up with Biana to tell y’all six things that I leaned while visiting Denver!

The Wandering Weekenders- 6 Things I Learned While Visiting Denver

  1. The altitude really can effect you if you’re not used to it- You’d think that this one is kind of a duh because everybody always talks about how the altitude effects people, and it really does! Chris and I aren’t in hardcore shape, but just walking up the incline to get into Red Rocks Amphitheater totally kicked our butts! I also found myself feeling a little bit more dehydrated during this trip, but that might be because of the lack of humidity along with the altitude. So definitely be prepared for not being able to be as athletic as you’re used to in Denver.

  2. If there are still tickets left for a concert at Red Rocks buy them immediately because the concert will get sold out- I have to admit that this  trip was not very planned for us at all, which actually turned out to be a blessing since it was an anniversary trip, but that also meant that we didn’t buy any tickets in advance. One of the things that I had heard that we needed to do while we were in Denver was go to a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater. So when I looked online and saw that there was a concert on Saturday night and there were still tickets on Tuesday, I thought that’d be a great thing thing to try and do Saturday night. So after we were done with all of our other activities on Saturday, we drove out to Red Rocks, parked, and walked up to the entrance in the rain, only to find out that the show was sold out. Whomp whomp! So definitely learn from our mistake and buy your tickets to your concert at Red Rocks because chances are it’ll get sold out!

  3. Denver people really like their beer- One of the things that we saw a lot of while we were in Denver was bars but breweries as well. In Houston we have quite a few craft breweries, but I don’t think the numbers compare to what Denver has! We were able to visit one brewery while we were there, but I know that my brother in law and other beer enthusiasts would have a blast visiting the Mile High City, even if it’s just to drink beer!

  4. Wine out of a can is actually pretty good- Even though we really didn’t plan our trip out very much, I still did some research on things to do in Denver, and one of the things that I knew that I wanted to do was a tour of the Infinite Monkey Theorem winery. The Infinite Monkey Theorem is an urban winery that produces wine from Colorado grapes in the middle of downtown Denver, and they were one of the first wineries to put wine in cans. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable about wine, but the thing that I really loved was being able to try wine out of a can for the first time! Not only was it delicious, but it was so cool too! You’d better believe that I’m going to try and find some of this at home!

  5. It can get hot in the Mile High City- When we originally booked our trip to Colorado I was really excited about maybe getting away from the Texas heat for a weekend, so you can imagine our surprise when we looked at the temperatures before we left and discovered that the highs were going to be in the 90’s while we were there! That’s still cooler than what it was in Houston, plus there wasn’t a ton of humidity, but I was still very happy that we hiked in the morning on Sunday!
The Wandering Weekenders- 6 Things I Learned While Visiting Denver
  6. Besides concerts, apparently Red Rocks Amphitheater is also used as a work out facility- When we missed the concert on Saturday night, we were still determined to go hiking at Red Rocks Sunday morning. We arrived early in the morning and saw that the amphitheater was actually open, so we decided to see what we had missed. Holy Batman, Denver! We were not prepared to see at least 100 people working out in the middle of Red Rock Amphitheater! All of those people were seriously so dedicated and pretty hard core running up and down all of those steps!

And there you have it! We still managed to do a lot during our trip to Denver, but we also enjoyed having a much more relaxed and easy going trip for our anniversary! I can’t wait to tell y’all all about the rest of our trip!

fitness and good beer – that about sums up denver haha. that altitude is a tricky one! it was helpful when i was training for some running races though. but you gotta get used to it. and be careful drinking bc the alcohol can sneak up on you. the weather there is so up and down but pretty nonetheless. great post girl!

    xoxo cheshire kat

    • Thank you! And I totally understand why they have to work out so much, because there’s so much good food and beer in Denver! I bet that it would be awesome to prepare for races in the higher altitude! I got winded just walking around in Red Rocks, I couldn’t imagine actually training for a race! I’m definitely wanting to plan another trip to Colorado soon! It was just so pretty!

  • I’m sorry to report that you will not find any canned wine when you get to Italia! Denver looks like a perfect getaway city – it has everything you need for a good time, plus its beautiful!

    • Well now I’m not sure if I want to go, just kidding! The mountains surrounding Denver were seriously so beautiful! Chris and I were driving and we were like “Oh look there’s the mountains!”

  • We have an Infinite Monkey Theorem here in Austin too! I haven’t had a chance to get over there, but I’ve definitely been curious. Looks like y’all had a great time despite not getting to go to the concert at Red Rocks. Denver looks so fun!

    • Denver is so much fun, and I bet that y’all would love it! Y’all should definitely take a Saturday and go to Infinite Monkey Theorem! It had such a cool and funky vibe and the wine was pretty cool, not my favorite but still good.

  • Oh fun, I haven’t been to Colorado since I was a kid. It’s so close for us, so it always gets kicked off the list of possible places for trips. heheh I really hope we make it out there sometime in the next few years. The altitude always kind of bugs me. 🙁 Which is a bummer, but I get used to it eventually. Bummer about the concert, but yes, definitely always buy in advance! We do concerts a lot, we usually end up planning mini trips around them. Glad you had a good anniversary trip! 🙂 XO – Alexandra

    • Thank you! I also hadn’t been to Colorado since I was a kid, so I was really excited to go back and experience it again. This was definitely different than my first trip though, this time we were in the city, and my first trip we were more in the mountains at Estes Park and Colorado Springs. Hopefully you’ll be able to make it to Denver soon! It’s a fun city with a lot of great food!

  • Wine in a can, now that’s genius! It looks like you had a great trip, even if some things didn’t go to plan. That amphitheatre looks so cool! I’ve never been somewhere at a particularly high altitude, so that’s not something I’d really considered before. Interesting! Thanks for sharing, can’t wait to read the rest 🙂

    • The wine in the can really is such a great concept! I could totally see me grabbing a pack and then going tubing on the river or tailgating with that instead of beer! Even though we missed out on the concert, it was still really cool to see the amphitheater!

  • Jen

The altitude is definitely no joke! People don’t realize how bad it is until they experience it for a little while.

    • I definitely didn’t realize how bad it was until we’d been there for a day! I think that I was most surprised about how dehydrated I got because of the altitude!

  • Darcy from A Memory of Us

Altitude sickness is no joke. I have never been bothered by it before but this last time we were in Breckenridge I got it one night an dit was miserable!!
    http://www.amemoryofus.com

    • That sounds so terrible, but thankfully it was only for one night! Luckily we didn’t have any problems this time around either!

  • yum wine from a can! The altitude is a real thing…I grew up in Calgary (also in the Rockies) and when I moved out east, I found it WAY easier to run at sea level. lol. Looks like such a fun trip – too bad about the concert! loved seeing all your snaps this weekend 🙂

    • Thank you! I definitely tend to over snap when on trips, but I just can’t help it! I can only imagine what it would be like to train for a major event in the higher altitude. I bet that you would be able to get some amazing times!

  • Looks like a fun and beautiful weekend! I have never been to Denver but it is on my short list of places to go soon.

    • It really was such a great weekend! Denver was such a fun and cool city, and I think that you’d have a great time there!

  • Red Rocks looks so amazing! That sucks you didn’t get to go to a concert there! I could never run those stairs omg!

    • I don’t think that I’d be able to run those stairs either! I just looked at them and I was like “why aren’t y’all at brunch? It’s Sunday!” I was sad we missed out on Red Rocks, but I guess that means that we have to go back, right?

  • Nadine

I think the whole nation is hot right now haha. But us down south have it worse with all this humidity. So gross!! I think Denver would be a fun city to visit. I am a huge fan of trying beers so I know I would like that aspect of it.

    • Exactly! The humidity makes the heat a thousand times worse! It seriously felt like we hit a wall when we stepped off the plane in Houston. You would have a ton of fun in Denver! All of the breweries looked so cool, and the food was great too!

  • Denver is in my top five US cities bucket list at the moment! I’ve never seen wine in a can before, I’m intrigued!

    • The wine in a can was so cool, and it would be perfect to just grab and go! I think that they sell it in most states, so I’m going to have to try and find it at home! Denver has a really funky and cool vibe, kind of like Portland, so I’d bet that you’d love it!

  • When we went to Colorado the first time I remember thinking that my in-laws were crazy for buying 5 cases of water for a week. I was SO thankful after I started to feel sick from the altitude. I get dehydrated easily anyways, but this was an entirely different level (no pun intended haha). Wine in a can sounds so cool and I am definitely requesting that we try that while we are in Denver next year! It sounds like you had a great trip despite the Red Rocks situation.

    • I seriously had no idea about the altitude making you get dehydrated faster, but I definitely wish that I had brought my water bottle around with me on Saturday. I could feel myself getting more and more dehydrated as the day went on, and the drinking didn’t help I’m sure! Y’all are going to have so much fun during your trip to Denver next year! The Infinite Monkey Theorem was so coo, and the wine in the can was actually pretty good! I want to try and find it in the store!

  • So fun! I love Denver and YES, the altitude is really quite insane. It definitely has an effect. I love all these hiking trails, what a beautiful setting and so fun on vacation!!! Wine in a can is really good (as tacky as I feel swilling it – ha!)

    • Haha I felt so weird swilling it too, but it was so good! I would love to take them tailgating or even hiking or tubing down the river! Red Rocks was so freaking beautiful! I would go back time and time again just to go there!

  • Christina Sotherden

So interesting that they had wine in cans!! Looks like you guys had a great time!

    • It was actually really good, and I’m so glad that we made it to the winery! It was such a blast and a great way to spend our anniversary!

  • Looks like you had a fantastic trip, minus a few hiccups! I’ve always wanted to hike/workout at Red Rocks – I’m so jealous that you got to do that.

    • You should totally try and plan a trip out there, just make sure that you buy the tickets to a concert in Red Rocks pretty far in advance! It was just so beautiful out there, and I totally want to go back again!

  • Rachel

I have always wanted to visit Denver but still haven’t yet! I have heard that about the altitude — it’s crazy how much a change in altitude can effect you! And wine out of a can?? I have never heard of that!! Was it red or white or both? Was it cold? I have so many questions haha! Sounds like it was a fun anniversary trip, minus the flight delays! Have a great start to the week!

    xo, Rachel
    A Blonde’s Moment

    • Thank you! Denver was such a great place for a weekend trip, but it would be great to go back and explore more of Colorado. The wine out of a can was seriously so good, and they even had a vending machine! The one we tried was a rose, but I think that they have white too. It was actually pretty good!

  • It sounds like you guys had a really fun trip! I’ve never been anywhere in Colorado, but the altitude thing does make me a little bit nervous– especially if it’s that hot! How cool/crazy to see that many people in one area (that’s not an actual workout facility) working out!

    • We had such a blast this past weekend! We really weren’t effected too much by the altitude, just a little bit by dehydration. I think that now that we know that it can be one of the side effects I would be sure to carry water with me. And it was so crazy to see that many people at Red Rocks! It would be such a fun place to work out!

  • I would love to visit Colorado! Pictures of Red Rocks always make me want to go asap. That’s crazy about the altitude.. I’d probably be feeling it for sure.

  • Denver is such a cool city! I’d love to see any concert in Red Rocks!

    • It really was such a cool city, and I would love to go back for another visit. From what we heard when we were just outside the amphitheater, seeing a concert there would be amazing!

  • Ashley Angle

Really enjoyed reading this as I have never been to Denver! I’d love to get to this part of our country. It’s so beautiful!

    • You should definitely try and make it to Colorado! Not only is it beautiful, but Denver has such a cool and fun vibe!

  • I have never been to Denver, so I was loving all your snaps. Bummer on the movie…but I really loved your pics and snaps of the people exercising at Red Rock- SO cool! That winery looks amazing and sounds really interesting, it’s always great to have a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide!

    • I’m glad that you enjoyed all my snaps because I definitely felt like I was oversnapping while I was there! It was so crazy to me to see all of the people exercising at Red Rocks! Even though I enjoyed our hike, I was wondering why everybody wasn’t at brunch!

  • Biana Perez

Sorry that you guys weren’t able to get to see a concert there, but you still had so many fun activities!! I can totally see how the altitude can affect you and I’ve heard the same thing about them loving beer out there!! xo, biana –BlovedBoston

    • That was exactly what we thought! We didn’t plan a ton of activities because we didn’t want to be tied to anything, so even though we missed out on the concert, that just means that we need to go back!

  • I’ve heard Red Rocks is amazing and I would definitely love to see a concert there! I remember trying to run on my first day in Colorado, that did not go so well. I got about a quarter of a mile and could not breathe.

    • I definitely think that I would have died if we had tried to exercise on this trip, just hiking alone got me winded. There were so many people that were fit in Colorado! I was so surprised by how many people were about exercising!

  • Living on Cloud Nine

We LOVE Denver. Great place for an Anni trip! Our oldest did get alltitude sickness once. We never have made it to Red Rocks but we would love to go. Love your words about a trip hangover, lol!!

    • It really does feel so true though! The feeling of going back to work on Monday after a trip is always so sad! A trip to Red Rocks is definitely worth it, so you’ll have to try and make another trip back!

  • Red rocks looks amazing! Sorry you did not get to see a show. Denver is such a great place and you got a good chunk of it! Bonne Anniversaire!

    • Even though we missed out on a show, I guess that means that we’ll just have to plan another trip back soon! Denver just had such a great and fun vibe, and I would love to go back!

  • One of my girlfriends just participated in a “Stadium Stomp” at a local stadium. She climbed over 12,000 stairs! I wonder if Red Rocks does something like that… I asked her the next day how sore she was. She said “VERY! but my legs look FANTASTIC!” haha
    Wine in a can…interesting……….

    • Maybe I do need to try and participate in something like that if that means that I can have some great looking legs! Red Rocks has to have something like that just purely based on the fact that there were so many people running stairs in the morning! The wine in a can really wasn’t too bad! I would love to drink that while tailgating or tubing during the summer!

  • What a fun weekend… Umm, wine in a can?!?! Was it good?!?! That amphitheater looks amazing!!

    • The wine in a can was actually pretty good! It was a rose, and I would love to drink it while tailgating or something like that! Red Rocks was so beautiful, and it’s totally worth another trip back!

  • Happy (late) Anniversary!! Denver looks soooo beautiful. I think we’ll definitely have to try to make it to Colorado sometime while we are living a little bit closer to it than the east coast 🙂

    • Thank you! And you totally should make a trip to Colorado! It was so beautiful, and had such a fun vibe! My parents are actually headed up there later on this year and they’re so excited!

  • Were you in Denver this past weekend? I was there too!! I totally agree with these! Such a fun place and happy late anniversary! 🙂

    • Thank you! That’s too funny that we were there at the same time! We had such a blast, and I would love to go back, especially if it meant seeing a concert at Red Rocks!

      • YES!!! I want to visit the Red Rocks so bad! There is so much to do there, I will need to take a month long vacay there!

  • I’ve heard lots about the altitude in Denver. I bet it would take a while to get used to. At the same time, that lack of humidity would feel good right about now. It’s so humid and hot on the East coast. I’m surprised it was in the 90’s there! I guess there’s not many places in the country it’s not hot right now.

    • I was really shocked by how hot it was in Denver! I was kind of looking forward to cooler weather because it’s really hot and humid in Texas too, but even though it was hot the lack of humidity felt great!

  • The last one was the coolest–I’ve not seen it without ppl there.

    • It was seriously so crazy seeing everybody working out at Red Rocks! I think that I was kind of expecting it to be empty!

  • What a bummer about making it out to Red Rocks to find out the show was sold out. I was hoping to go there on our trip but there were no concerts that weekend and never found time to make it out there to explore. It looks like such a cool venue though. How did I miss the wine in a can?

    • The wine in a can is seriously such an awesome! They sell it in a lot of states, so I’m thinking that maybe I need to pick some up during football season for tailgating. I was really bummed about the concert too, but I was happy that we were able to see it. I think that means that you need another trip to Denver or Colorado in general since you missed out on seeing Red Rocks on your last trip!

      • lol I definitely think we’ll have to return to Denver since we have some unfinished business there. We had the hardest time finding a store that sold beer or wine. I ended up buying from the hotel to take to the room so that’s probably why I missed the canned wine.

  • a good friend of mine from college just took a job out in denver! she’s so excited and i have to say i’m excited about having someone to visit out there now, haha 🙂

    • I think that means that you need to start planning a trip now! It’s always so much more fun when you can visit somebody that you know because they can tell you about all the fun things that the locals do.

  • I’d love to visit Red Rocks one day! I’m planning a trip to Denver with my dad in a few months, I can’t wait! The breweries are at the top of our list 🙂

    • We only had the chance to visit one brewery, but it was a lot of fun! I can’t wait to see which ones you choose to visit! And you have to make a trip out to Red Rocks when you’re in Denver! It’s just so beautiful!

  • Oh my goodness, how did I not see this post earlier!? I couldn’t stop smiling the entire time I read this post—I can relate to each and every thing, and it makes me miss my Colorado home even more! My boyfriend and I had our first date hiking up Red Rocks, and it’s always been a summer MUST to see at least two concerts at the venue. They are the most incredible experience (and yes, you did need to get tickets early).

Yes, we love beer. Love love love our beer.

So glad you had a great time and got to experience Denver!
