I have to admit that last year when we visited Denver on our anniversary weekend, I didn’t really have a ton planned, which is pretty much unheard of for me. Normally I have every day planned out down to the minute so we can see and do as much as possible, but since this was an anniversary trip and we had some bigger trips coming up later on that year (Seattle, Europe, Disney World, and Napa), we just decided to keep it low key. But just because it was a low key trip doesn’t mean that we didn’t have a blast and that I don’t have some recommendations on how you can spend a weekend in Denver!

The Wandering Weekenders- How To Spend A Weekend In Denver

  • Eat!- If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know how much I love good food and love exploring cities by eating my way through them, so it should be no surprise that this is one of my top recommendations for you during your trip to Denver! Denver is known for being a foodie city and has a wide variety of restaurants for you to try out, and I’m being completely honest when I say that we enjoyed every meal that we had while we were in the Mile High City. Definitely bring some stretchy pants with you during your trip to Denver and be prepared to eat your way through the city!

  • Visit a brewery or two- Along with being known for a foodie city, Denver is also known for being a brewery city. With a wide range of craft breweries located throughout the city, you and your fellow beer lover will be in heaven with the amount of breweries that you can visit and brewskies you can try! If you’re an avid beer fan, you might consider booking a brewery tour with one of the many that are available around the city. These tours will take you to some of the more famous breweries, give you a tour, and give you a tasting as well! Just be sure to book well enough in advance! We waited too long and missed out on this opportunity!

  • Visit a winery- I know that it’s ironic to talk about visiting a winery in the state of Colorado, especially when you’re pregnant, but trust me, you don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to get your very own urban wine experience at the Infinite Monkey Theorem! Infinite Monkey Theorem is not only one of the first wineries to grow grapes in Colorado, but they’re also one of the first wineries to can wine as well! I’ll have a whole post about our visit to the winery later on, but trust me you don’t want to miss out on this fun experience!

  • Go to a sporting event- If you’re an avid sports fan, you definitely don’t want to miss out on your chance to see either the Denver Rockies or the Denver Broncos play while you’re on your trip. Both sports complexes are located right downtown, which makes it perfect to escape for an afternoon or evening of some American classics. Just be sure to buy your tickets in advance!

  • Go shopping along 16th Street Mall- To some, shopping while on vacation might seem boring or like something that they can do at home, but what makes 16th Street Mall so unique is the fact that it’s located right in the heart of downtown Denver, and that the mall is located completely outdoors. In Texas the weather is too hot to be shopping outdoors for over half the year, so we definitely enjoyed the cooler weather and walking up and down the 16th Street Mall.

  • Get out of the city and go hiking- While this isn’t truly in Denver, you can’t go to Colorado and not take some time to enjoy the mountains and go hiking! Thankfully, there’s plenty of parks and mountains around, so it creates the perfect opportunity for you to get out of the city and enjoy the great outdoors. Chris and I opted to spend our last day of our trip, which also happened to be our anniversary, hiking in Red Rocks Park, mainly so we could see the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater!
The Wandering Weekenders- How To Spend A Weekend In Denver
  • See a show at Red Rocks Amphitheater- Located just 15 miles away from downtown Denver, Red Rocks Amphitheater is probably the most iconic concert venue in the whole of the United States. Not only are you surrounded by these huge and beautiful red rocks that were created naturally by the earth, the amphitheater is supposed to be one of the best places to perform acoustically for performers. I will say that even if it’s somebody that you’ve never heard of before performing the weekend that you’ll be in Denver, make sure that you buy your tickets IN ADVANCE. Chris and I were debating about going to a concert while we were there and just decided to wait until we got there to buy tickets. Big mistake! By the time that we made it over to Red Rocks, the show was already sold out, which means that we had to head back to Denver, concertless. So definitely learn from our mistakes!

And there you have it, my suggestions for how to spend a weekend in Denver! Like I said, most of these items are pretty low key, but isn’t that half the fun sometimes when you’re traveling, just to have a trip that you’re not going at 60MPH the whole time? • Awe I love Denver. It’s such a fun city. The last time I was at Red Rocks, I was so out of shape… I never felt so tired after getting to the top lol. I know it’s the elevation but whoa ha

    • I remember feeling the exact same way! I don’t think that we realize how much the elevation and the dry weather really effects us until we get there! I wish that we’d had the chance to go to a concert there, but I guess that’s just another excuse to go back!

  • oh denver, what a fun city. i love that there’s so much to do downtown then you can just hop right outside and go to those gorg mountains. i cant get enough!

    xoxo cheshire kat

    • I loved that about Denver too! Everything was so walkable in Denver, but it was also super easy to get out of the city for hiking in the mountains. It still blows my mind how close Red Rocks is to the city!

  • Biana Perez

I’ve had a few of my close friends actually move to Denver because they loved it when they visited so much!! It looks like such a fun and lively place! xo, Biana –BlovedBoston

    • I know a few people that have moved there as well because they just fell in love with the city. That’s your perfect excuse to go and visit isn’t it!

  • Rachel

I have never been to Denver, but it’s definitely on our list of places to visit! I remember when you posted last year about the canned wine and I thought that was the coolest thing ever! You know we are foodies too, so it’s great to know there are so many good restaurants to pick from!

    xo, Rachel
    A Blonde’s Moment

    • We had such a long list of places to try out when we went to Denver and it was so hard to pick where exactly we wanted to visit because we had such a limited amount of time there. The canned wine is seriously the best invention ever! I can imagine myself drinking canned rosé at a tailgate instead of beer!

  • Perfect to read since I just returned from Denver and I’m happy I checked all of those off my list except visiting a winery. I didn’t even think to go to one. Red Rocks is just amazing! That’s a must-visit while in Denver!

    • I can’t wait to hear all about your concert experience at Red Rocks! From what we could see when we walked up, it looked like it would have been a once in a lifetime experience! And I forget how I actually stumbled across that winery, but I was so glad that we visited! It was so much fun, and I loved the fact that they had canned wine! They have another location in Austin too, so you can visit it when you make a trip to Texas!

  • Living on Cloud Nine

We’ve been to Denver but never to Red Rocks. My husband wants to go so bad! I know a gal who moved there and said she’ll never come back to the Midwest, lol.

    • Haha I don’t blame her, Denver is just so beautiful! And y’all should totally make another trip back out there for a concert at Red Rocks! I know that Chris and I would love to do that!

  • We had a blast in Denver too, although we were there in the winter so things like Red Rocks were a no-go! I would love to go back in the summer, I bet the weather is just amazing!

    • The weather was so beautiful! I was kind of expecting that it’d be a little cooler than what it was in Houston, but it was still a little bit warm. And I know how much you love the mountains that a trip during the summer just to enjoy the mountains would be so much fun for you!

  • LOVE this! I was so bummed last year, when we had to cancel our trip to Denver to see my Yankees play his Rockies. But he was stuck out of state for the Verizon strike which was a blessing in disguise. Since I was pregnant, I would have missed out on all the breweries and I’m not sure how I would have done at that altitude with breathing and such. I can’t wait to finally go take in the city, eat all the food, drink all the beer, see a Rockies game, and of course catch a show at Red Rocks <3

    Green Fashionista

    • I know how you feel, I think that going back when you can enjoy the breweries would be perfect for y’all! And I know that we sometimes felt short of breath walking and hiking and I wasn’t even pregnant at the time, so I can’t even imagine what it would have been like for you. I hope that y’all have the chance to make it out there and see his Rockies play!

  • I love Denver! One of my best friends used to live there. Did you eat at Snooze? Although I guess they may have one in Houston now since they have 2 in Austin. I love all the bars with rooftops in lo do. I did not visit red rocks and that is on my bucket list, just need to find the right show to justify a trip just for that!

    • That’s exactly what I was thinking too, that maybe we just need to check out when some of our favorite artists are going to be there and just book a trip that we know that we’d love. And we were debating about eating at Snooze while we were there, but we ended up opting out since we found out that there was in Houston, although we still haven’t been. But they are getting ready to open up another location near us, so I know that we’ll be trying it sometime in the near future!

  • Jen

I’ve only ever been in the Denver airport haha! It does seem like a really fun city with so much to do. I know we are only 8 1/2 hours from there so maybe we can take a long weekend and go explore. 🙂 Thanks for all the tips!

    • I think that y’all would have so much fun in Denver! It’s so beautiful, but it also has so many things to do and explore. Plus I bet that they have a bunch of races, so that would be the perfect excuse for y’all to make a long weekend out of Denver!

  • I SO wish we could have seen a show at Red Rocks when we were in Denver last year. I absolutely loved the city and definitely want to go back for a winery or two!

    Meg, Borrowed Heaven

    • We were so bummed that we didn’t make it to a show at Red Rocks too, but it just gives us another excuse to go back. Plus we can try out some more breweries too!

  • Food, beer, wine, hiking, and that amphitheater — oh my gosh!! Denver just went up on my travel list! I’ve heard that Colorado is gorgeous but I’ve never been!

    • You definitely need to try and make it to Colorado! It’s such a beautiful state, and Denver really just has the best of everything in the city. I hope that y’all can plan a trip out there soon!

  • What a great variety of activities to pack in and they all sound like things I’d just love! 🙂

    • I know that you would, especially since I know how much you love hiking and being in the outdoors! Red Rocks is so beautiful, but there’s a few national parks in Colorado as well that I don’t think are too far away from Denver!

  • I’m really curious about the urban winery! That sounds like a cool experience!

    • It was so much fun! They actually have another location in Austin, of course, and it’s so much fun! They started canning their wine too, which I think would be so much fun and perfect for tailgating, although we’d have to wait until next year!

  • The Red Rocks venue seems so cool!! I’d love to see a concert there!!!!

    • It really is such an awesome place, and we were so bummed to miss out on seeing a concert there! I guess it’s just another reason to go back!

  • Wait – Denver has a winery?!?! Oh wow, had no idea!! I haven’t been to Denver in ages!!

    • I think that it’s relatively new, but it was really cool and right up my alley! I can’t wait to share more about it!

  • Oh, you are kind of predicting my next trip! Prices from LA to Denver are dirt cheap but I have not decided to book. I need a place relatively close to LA since I am not going to have a lot of time. If I go, I will eat as much as possible. #wanderfulwednesday

    • I hope that you make it to Denver! It really is such a fun city and perfect for a weekend or a long weekend away. If you’re planning on going hiking or going to a concert at Red Rocks, I definitely recommend getting a car. I think at the end of the day it’d be cheaper than ubering.

  • Nadine

The amphitheater looks so amazing!!!! I think that mall would be super fun to visit too! Food, breweries and wineries are always on my list of places to hit not matter where I visit.

    • Mine too! I don’t know if it’s just being on vacation, but I find that drinking a beer or a glass of wine just makes me more relaxed and feel more like I’m on vacation. And walking around 16th Street Mall was perfect even in the summer! I was so jealous of their great weather!

  • I love these tips! Denver is really on my “must go” list:)

    • I hope that you make it out there soon! It’s such a fun city and perfect for a little weekend away or a long trip too!

  • I’d love to visit the amphitheater and I’m always up for good food so I’m sure I’d love Denver!

  • red rocks is so on my list! I want to visit so bad.

  • Denver’s such a cool city! I wish we had time for a visit to Red Rocks!

    • You definitely need to try and make another trip back then! Red Rocks was definitely my favorite part of our whole trip!
