10 Best Destinations For A Girls Trip

For the past few years, my girlfriends and I have tried to take a trip together every year. We were all so close in college, and then afterwards we all moved to different parts of the state and country (and eventually to another country altogether), so a trip together was the perfect way to stay close. Obviously this year we decided on Charleston for our destination, but I thought that it’d be fun to talk about some other great destinations for an amazing girls trip for this Wanderlust Wednesday with Kerri, Kate, and Emily!

The Wandering Weekenders- 10 Best Destinations For A Girls Weekend

  1. Charleston- When we were thinking about a place for this year’s girls trip, Charleston just seemed like the perfect place. Not only is it one of the oldest cities in the United States, but it’s also extremely beautiful and girly with the all of the amazing architecture (read perfect for Instagram!). You also can’t beat the amazing food scene either! Another appeal of Charleston is the fact that it’s a smaller city, so it was easy to navigate and get around, and also relatively inexpensive compared to the other top travel destinations in the US!

  2. New Orleans- There’s a reason that we chose this for our first girls trip ever! Not only does New Orleans have a great night life (hello Bourbon Street!), but New Orleans is another city that’s rich in history as well. From tours of the Garden District and the French Quarter to spooky ghost tours at night, you can definitely get a feel for the city of New Orleans no matter where you are. And who can pass up some amazing Creole or Cajun food or some delicious beignets from Cafe du Monde? Plus, you can’t beat how relatively inexpensive the city (if you don’t go during one of the top festival weekends) considering how touristy the city is.

  3. Las Vegas- Oh Las Vegas, you definitely know how to keep a secret, right? Sin City is known all over the world as being a place to let your inhibitions go and have a great time, and who better to do that with than your girlfriends! From the clubs and night life, to the pool parties during the day, to the amazing shopping, and the out of this world food, Las Vegas is the perfect place to go with your girls! Just be prepared for the very high price tag of this very fun city!
The Wandering Weekenders- 10 Best Destinations For A Girls Weekend
  4. New York City- New York City might be one of the most iconic cities in the United States! From the numerous different neighborhoods that each have a vibe all on their own, to the amazing food and shopping, to all of the cultural experiences like Broadway and the art galleries and experiences, it’s easy to see how NYC would be the perfect destination to go with your best gals! Again, because New York City is known all over the world, it’s definitely going to be a destination with a higher price tag than some of the other cities.
The Wandering Weekenders- 10 Best Destinations For A Girls Weekend
  5. Napa- I think that all I need to say is wine for a reason why Napa would be a great destination to visit with your besties! Besides some out of this world wine, Napa also has a great food scene with some of the world’s best chefs. Although there’s not too much more to do in Napa besides drink wine, sometimes that’s all you and your girlfriends really need! Just be prepared to pay for everything when you visit Napa, including all of your tastings!
The Wandering Weekenders- 10 Best Destinations For A Girls Weekend
  6. Austin- Being a Texas girl, you know that I have to throw a great Texas location on this list! Austin is known for being the capital of Texas, but it’s also known for being “weird”, aka not like the rest of the Lone Star State! Austin is definitely anything but traditional Texas, but that also means that it has a lot of other fun things to offer. Austin has its famous 6th Street for some night life, an awesome music scene, a ton of festivals throughout the year, an awesome food scene, and a ton of outdoor activities ranging from hiking and canoeing to all the lake and river activities as well. And since Austin is in Texas, it’s relatively inexpensive as well.
The Wandering Weekenders- 10 Best Destinations For A Girls Weekend
  7. Boston- If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, then you probably know that I’m a huge history buff, which is one of the reasons that we chose Boston as a destination for one of our girls trips. Besides being one of the integral cities during the American Revolution and having a ton of history, Boston is another city that’s has a great food scene, a great cultural scene with tons of museums, and also a great sports scene as well. Girls can love sports as well, so don’t be afraid to take in a Red Sox or a Patriots game while you’re there! Because of it’s location, Boston is another city that’s a little bit on the expensive side.
The Wandering Weekenders- 10 Best Destinations For A Girls Weekend
  8. Nashville- Nashville is another fun Southern city, that’s very quickly becoming the bachelorette party capital for the country, and there’s obviously a reason why. Nashville is a lot cheaper to visit than Las Vegas, and it offers some of the same great benefits as Sin City! Broadway offers a great place to party, and with all of the amazing live music, that puts it a step above Vegas in my opinion. Nashville also offers an amazing southern food scene, and if you’re a fan of country music, then Nashville is definitely the place to be!
The Wandering Weekenders- 10 Best Destinations For A Girls Weekend
  9. Los Angeles- Los Angeles might not be a very traditional place to visit with your girlfriends, but I think that it’d be a ton of fun! LA is the home of Hollywood, so the potential to run into some of the celebrities that you love is way higher than any where else in the country. And who better to fangirl with than some of your best friends! Because of all the celebrities that live in LA, you can also count on some fabulous shopping, some great food, and very high prices!
The Wandering Weekenders- 10 Best Destinations For A Girls Weekend
  10. Disney World- Again, Disney World is a very untraditional destination for some, but where else can you relive your childhood with some of your girls! I’ve always thought that it would be a ton of fun to get your picture taken with some of your favorite Disney princesses with some of your favorite girlfriends! Disney World is definitely not just for kids or big kids, you can definitely have some adult fun in Epcot and attempt to drink your way around the world!

Work Conferencing in Las Vegas

If you follow me on Instagram or Snapchat (@ashleylillis) you might have noticed that I wasn’t hanging out in the HTX last week, rather I was in fabulous Las Vegas, or Sin City,as it’s so commonly referred to, for a work conference. For Kristen and Gretchen’s What’s New With You Linkup I thought that I’d give you a brief overview of my time in Las Vegas.

Tuesday

Our conference started Wednesday morning, so we all had to arrive the Tuesday before the conference started. Things were really hectic at work because one of our public companies was about to file their annual report and we literally worked right up until we had to leave. Normally security line at Hobby (the smaller airport that Southwest flies out of in Houston) is very short, but we actually had a decent line. That meant that I pretty much had time to buy dinner, Pappasitos nachos and a margarita of course, before getting in line to board.

You can actually walk around the airport with alcohol but you can’t take it onto the plane, a concept that I’ve never understood, so while I was waiting in line I was sipping down my margarita. I guess a guy felt bad for me because he handed me his free drink ticket. Unfortunately I didn’t get to use the ticket because our flight between Houston and Austin was too short. That was ok with me though because our flight from Austin to Las Vegas was not even a third of the way filled! There were only 55 people so we all could have had a row to ourselves! I feel like that never happens anymore on airplanes!

Once we arrived in Las Vegas we grabbed our bags and checked into our hotel, The Cosmopolitan. I had actually stayed here before for another conference and loved the hotel. It’s not your usual Las Vegas theme and I love the mysterious vibes that it gives off. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from being married to my husband, it’s that you have to ask for things you want, the worst thing that can happen is that they can say no. So when I checked in, I asked if I could get a room with a view, and lucky for they gave me an awesome suite with the best views of the Bellagio fountains! I seriously wanted to sleep outside on balcony just to watch them!

Wednesday

Most of the day Wednesday was filled with conference time. Lucky for us though, we didn’t start the first day until 10:00 which meant that I had enough time to work out before everything started. Obviously most people go to Las Vegas to indulge, but if you’ve never seen the workout facilities in a Las Vegas casino before, you should definitely check them out. They’re beautiful and you don’t have to wait that long to use the equipment!

After our conference was done for the day, some of my coworkers and I decided to walk around the strip and do some shopping. I didn’t do too much damage, but I did manage to get myself a new pair of Michael Kors flats because my other ones had a hole in the toe.

We had dinner reservations at Mon Ami Gabi in Paris for dinner, so after the shopping we dropped our bags off at our room before heading over to Paris for some pre dinner gambling.

Now I don’t know about y’all, but I’m a high roller when it comes to gambling, and nothing gets me going like betting the minimum on the penny slots! Just kidding, about the being a high roller part, not about the minimum bet on the penny slots. I didn’t win anything the whole time we were in Las Vegas, but my coworker did win $80 on the Big Bang Theory penny slot machine! It was awesome to see her keep on getting a bonus!

The Wandering Weekenders- Work Conferencing In Las Vegas

We had reservations for dinner, but the thing about Mon Ami Gabi is that you want to sit on the patio to have an amazing view of the Bellagio fountains, which of course, you can’t make reservations for the patio. But again, ask and you shall receive, and we had not only an amazing dinner, but great views of the fountains too.

Thursday

Again, Thursday was filled with conferencing, but I was good and got another workout in before it started. We decided to skip the lunch that day (they were having tacos, and hotel tacos in Vegas definitely weren’t going to be up to our standards), so we decided to grab some amazing burgers from Holstein’s instead. Definitely stop by here when you’re at the Cosmo next time, and make sure to get an adult milkshake! They’re worth every calorie!

The Wandering Weekenders- Work Conferencing In Las Vegas

Once we were released for the day we headed out to walk the strip again and do some more shopping before our networking event that night. One of coworkers had never been to Las Vegas before so we took her over to The Venetian, so she could see all of the gondolas and everything. Of course I had to tease my friend in Italy about whether The Venetian was basically the same as Venice.

The Wandering Weekenders- Work Conferencing In Las Vegas

We spent some time at the networking event that night before it started raining on us, in the middle of the desert. I know, it never rains in Vegas! Lucky for us it was only a light sprinkle, but that was enough for us to head over to the Bellagio for dinner at Olives.

Olives has an amazing patio as well that puts you right next to the Bellagio fountains, and the view alone is enough of a reason to eat there, but they do have some great food too. We asked if we could have a table on the patio, but unfortunately they were all booked. It wasn’t all that bad though, our table ended up being right next to the windows so we still had a great view for dinner!

Friday

That Friday was the last day of the conference, and only a half day at that. We packed up our bags and after we were done conferencing we set out in search of Secret Pizza. I had been hearing about Secret Pizza in the Cosmo for years, and I was determined to find it this time around! Luckily, it wasn’t too hard to find, and we all had some delicious slices for lunch! It was the perfect way to end our time in Vegas!

The Wandering Weekenders- Work Conferencing In Las Vegas

So as you can see, even though I spent most of the day in a conference, I still had a blast and got to do a lot of the things that I find fun in Vegas. If you have the opportunity to go to a conference in Las Vegas, you should definitely go!

6 More Things I Learned While Visiting Las Vegas

Hey everyone! Long time, no blog post right? Well, last week was a whirlwind of a week with a work trip to Vegas, so I really didn’t have time to write many posts. Vegas was a blast, like usual, so I thought that I’d try to sum it up with another round of “What I Learned While Visiting.”

The Wandering Weekenders- 6 More Things I Learned While Visiting Las Vegas

  1. I learned how to play craps and roulette- Finally, after 6 times in Vegas, I learned how to play a table game! I mean, I know how to play poker and blackjack but the thought of losing my money that quickly never really appealed to me. This time though, my friends taught me the basics of both craps and roulette, and I had a blast playing them! I still won’t play at the expensive table, or make any wild bets, but it was a blast to hang out with people and have some fun gambling (considering I didn’t think that I actually liked to gamble).
  2. My key to gambling is to make my money last as long as possible- This seems like a completely obvious thing, I mean you want your money to last, but if you always make the max bet possible in slots or make multiple bets on the tables, you can easily lose your money super fast. I know, I know, the only way to make money is to bet high, but if you’re just in it for the fun and not trying to win a ton of money, then betting the minimum might be the best option for you.
  3. People have some crazy gambling superstitions- While playing craps, I noticed that people had some crazy superstitions and routines that they would do before they actually rolled. One person would make sure that the die were on a certain number and facing a certain way before rolling, and another was tossing them around before rolling. It was so crazy that they actually thought these things would make them roll better! Word to the wise, the dealers really don’t like it when people do that because it makes them worried that you’re cheating.
  4. The best drinks are free drinks- When you gamble, or attend a conference with a bunch of crazy accountants that offer an open bar, you can always get some free drinks! And those drinks are a thousand times better than the $12 that you can expect to pay everywhere else. Granted, the drinks you get from gambling might be a little watered down, but a beer is still the same everywhere you are!
  5. I’m definitely not in college anymore- During this trip, we stayed up super late gambling (I’m talking 4 in the morning late) and having fun, and we had to wake up early in order to get to our conference. In college, this was never really a big deal, I could go out on Thursday night and still wake up for an 8:00 AM class on Friday, but at the ripe old age of 28, my body was very angry at me for staying up late and waking up early. Thank goodness for my IV of coffee and Diet Coke, otherwise, I might have fallen asleep during the conference!
  6. The Cosmo has the best views of the Bellagio fountains- Last time we were in Vegas, we stayed at the Bellagio and we managed to get a room with a view of the fountains. Our room ended up being on a lower floor, but we still had a great view, plus we could turn the TV on and listen to the music that was playing with the fountains. That view and any other view that we’ve had in Vegas completely pales in comparison to the view that I had at the Cosmo. I was on the 58th Floor and had the most amazing views of the strip (see the picture above). The only thing that would have made my stay better was to have a balcony like my other coworkers.

Well that kinda sorta wraps up my last trip to Vegas. It was so much fun to hang out with coworkers, and now that I know how to “gamble” a little I can’t wait for the next trip!
